Fly to Toothukudi from Bengaluru and Chennai

Toothukudi was in news recently for all the bad reasons- police firing killing protesters, Sterlite plant polluting the environment and so on.

At least some good news.
Indigo and Spicejeet now fly to Toothukudi (formerly known as Tuticorin). Spicejet flight begins from today (July) while Indigo flight is set to begin from 26th July. Airport code for Tuticorin is TCR
The flight option will reduce a 600 kms/9 hours bus journey between BLR/Chennai and Thoothukudi to some 3 hours (90 mins flight)+ airport time.

Spicejet has only 1 daily flight from Bengaluru to Toothukudi while Indigo has announced 3 daily flights from Chennai. Unfortunately ticket prices are not very cheap- costs INR 6000+ for a return ticket- same price as Chennai - Delhi

Of course you can connect to Toothukudi from other parts of India via Blr or Chennai on these airlines.

How you can make use of these flights?
Apart from exploring Toothukudi, you can make a trip involving Tirunelveli (popular for Halwa, 60 kms from Tuticorin), Kanyakumari-130 kms from Thoothukdi and possibly return via Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala (100 kms from Kanyakumari)

Indigo Sale till 30th June- Not much exciting

Indigo is currently running a sale, with lowest price (one way) at around 1200+ 225 convenience fee one way for super short flights (like Chennai-Bengaluru)

You've to book before 30th June and fly before 27th September.

I did check the fare for multiple destinations and dates but didn't find the rates tempting enough. The discount is hardly 15-20% compared to normal prices. However you might want to check for your city and destinations.
In my opinion a sale we should be able to book short haul distances for under 1000 INR inclusive of convenience fee, if it has to be considered cheap.

AirArabia cheap deals to Sharjah from Calicut and Trivandrum

Air Arabia has some cheap deals- INR 10-11k return tickets to Sharjah from Trivandraum (Thiruvananthapuram) and Kozhikode (Calicut) airports.
Below is one of the cheapest I could locate- of course if you can search more dates you might find it even cheaper. An administrative fee of Rs 450 will be added during payment on top of this amount.
Note that AirArabia is a low cost carrier and everything costs extra- If you've to buy bags, meals, seat selection etc another 4 to 8k will add to total amount, depending on your selection.

Besides going to Sharjah you can try other destinations on Air Arabia's network as well- a ticket to Russia can be had for about 35k return. Air Arabia competes with FlyDubai in Middle east based low cost market.

10 factors that influence price of airline tickets

While all of us want cheapest possible flight tickets, airlines have their own strategies and methodology to decide on ticket prices so that they can maximize profits, without losing customers to competition. In this post, let us analyze 10 factors that influence your flight ticket price.
1. Historic Data
Historic travel data often form a basis for deciding future price. Holiday seasons that are guaranteed to get lots of bookings are priced higher, seasons known to have very poor load factor are priced cheaper and so on. Combining historical data along with other current factors as well as some amount of gut feeling those who set prices make a decision on what price would work best for a date and destination- they need to maximize profit for the airline at the same time ensuring price is reasonable and not too high to lose customers.

2. Competition
While factors like flying time is supposed to be the logical base for deciding the price, often competition forces airlines to defy commonsense and price cheaper. Take an example- Chennai to Seychelles via Colombo on Srilankan easily costs around 40000 INR. But Mumbai to Seychelles via Colombo on Srilankan is priced at 27000- though Mumbai-Colombo flight time is longer and more fuel is needed. This is because at Mumbai, there’s more competition- Ethiopean offers Mumbai-Seychelles via its base in Ethiopia for about 27000 INR- to win over Mumbai passengers, Srilankan prices its ex Mumbai ticket cheaper, for specific destinations. Same discounted rate may not apply if you’re trying to fly to somewhere else, where there isn’t fierce competition.

Similarly, Delhi Trivandrum on Air India may cost 6000, while Delhi to Male via Trivandrum may cost only 6500, though Trivandrum Male individual ticket would cost a lot more. This is because as a destination Male in Maldives, Air India has competition from Spicejet (which flies to Male via Kochi) and Srilankan (which flies to Male via Colombo) but for Delhi- Trivandrum there may not be much competition. So the logic of distance doesn’t often apply in air ticket pricing. It is often competition on the route.

3. Load factor:
On each flight, first few seats- like 5-10% are sold super cheap-often at a loss as well. Next few seats at higher price and last few seats at maximum possible price. This is the general rule followed in the industry and this is why almost everyone suggests book early to save more. A converse to this is that more convenient flights are often expensive. A flight with shorter connection time, more convenient timings etc will be expensive compared to one with more transit time, flying in n out at late night etc. If you can deal with some inconvenience, airlines are happy to offer a lower fare.

But load factor doesn’t always help if you’re booking 6-9 months in advance. Check next point.

4. Exception to load factor rule
Standard price for far away dates- if you’re trying to book a ticket now for say April 2019, it is most likely to be more expensive than what it costs to fly in October-November 2018. This is because airlines have set only a standard price for long term and haven’t decided to increase or decrease based on load.  Thus unless there’s an offer or sale, booking long term in advance may cost you more. As travel date comes closer, airlines may vary prices- if the flight is empty or competition is tough drop prices further- this is why a near term ticket might be cheaper than long term. So how to use this situation for your advantage? Do check my earlier post on how to book cheapest tickets.

5. Promo fares
Airlines regularly run promotional offers- idea with promo fares is as below
On a normal day, let us say an airline sells 10000 tickets worth Rs 1 crore (assuming an average 10000 per ticket). During a promo/sale, airline hopes to sell much more- say 50000 tickets, at say Rs 6000 on an average and amass a much larger sum- in this case 30 crores.  Though tickets are discounted, airline gets huge working capital in short span- which they can use for immediate expenses instead of having to take a loan. Plus, lots of restrictions are imposed on sale tickets- like no refund, no date change, no baggage and so on- this results in a small % of passengers who booked during sales won’t be able to fly as per plan, resulting in free money to the airline. Plus since there’ll be several months gap from date of booking to actual flight, airline earns interest on money earned from sale. For passengers, promo are an opportunity to fly to their dream destination at a much discounted fare, with a risk of losing 100% if they can’t travel as per plan.

There’s no way to predict which airline will run a sale, when and at what price. Subscribe to airline loyalty programs, keep a list of your target destinations and the average price you’ve seen. If you’re flexible with your dates and destination and have a reasonable certainty of being able to travel as per plan, buying tickets during a sale (buy only if it is significantly cheaper than average price you’ve noted down) could be good idea.

6. Launch Fares
While flying to new locations, airlines may sell some seats at discounted price, to attract customers and create awareness that they are now flying to the destination and are very cheap

7. Bundled services vs no frills model
Low cost airlines which sell super cheap tickets and charge extra for everything are giving real headache to full service airlines. For many passengers the idea of flying cheap and paying extra for only select services where absolutely necessary makes lot of sense. To counter this, even full service airlines are launching fares which exclude some services. If a fare doesn’t include check in bag, costs more to reschedule/cancel etc, such fares could be cheaper. Thus it is important to know what is included in the fare type you’re paying and if all the included services are really needed.

8. Own flight vs codeshare
If your itinerary includes more than one airline, it could cost a bit more than flying with any one airline. A codeshare flight means one airline paying to another airline. If you can book directly on any one airline for the entire journey, then it will be lot cheaper. Thus, pay attention if your itinerary is served by same airline or different ones.

Refer screenshot below- on your flight to Reunion Island, if you book on Air India instead of actual operator, you'll have to pay 17k or 75% more, for same flight. So be careful.

9. Aircraft type
A cheaper aircraft type might be cheaper to fly in. This is not always true- on a bigger aircraft, if airline can sell all seats, per seat cost can be less. But usually if the sector is served by an ATR vs an A320, ATR takes less fuel, costs less to buy and maintain and may attract less airport fees- thus a ATR flight might be priced cheaper than the faster but larger A320 flight.

10. Airport fees
Cheaper airport fees result in cheaper tickets. Chennai airport, managed by AAI, charges much less fees compared to nearby Bengaluru- thus flying out of Chennai is always cheaper than flying out of Bengaluru, irrespective of airline/total distance etc. During international travel the price difference can be easily 5k to 10k INR- often making it more economical for cost conscious passengers to reach Chennai by road/rail and catch a flight.

Of course there’re other contributing factors- staff salary, debt servicing, ground handling and various other costs- but they get distributed evenly and do not significantly contribute to highs and lows of a ticket price for a given origin-destination.

AirAsia website new feature-locate lowest fare dates

Air Asia website has introduced a new useful feature on its website. Website now shows any adjacent onward and return dates on which the fare could be cheaper.

Notice the top row in below image.
This is useful for those who are flexible with dates- now they don't have to manually scramble for different dates trying to locate cheapest return tickets- the website will do it for you.

AirAsia already shows a fare right inside date picker calendar and rates on adjacent dates- this new feature is on top of existing ones.

However I suspect this feature will be suspended during Big Sale or other deep discount sales. Let us see.

This is not industry first- many airlines- like Srilankan do show a monthly calendar showing cheapest fares.

While this is a welcome feature, the previous concern of deliberately complicated cancellation process hasn't been improved yet by Air Asia

Paris can be used as a gateway to Europe. If you have Europe on your mind for 2018, you might want to check this opportunity-36k is not super cheap, but at this moment very reasonable price.
Be advised the tickets could be non refundable. Check the terms carefully before purchase.

Cheapest way to reach city from Mangaluru airport in Bajpe!

At times airport taxi may cost more than the flight ticket. Thus I always keep an eye for cheaper alternatives to reach city from airport or vice versa. I've previously written about cheapest way to reach Hyderabad airport, Chennai Airport and Cochin Airport. In this post I am explaining cheapest way to reach Bajpe's Mangaluru international airport (IXE) from city or how to reach Mangaluru city in lowest cost from Mangalore airport.

October 2022: Prices to various places from Mangalore airport is listed below
June 2023:The prices have gone up 20-25%. The cost to Kundapura is now 3150 INR

Having flown all the way from Chennai to Mangaluru on Indigo for about INR 1750 or just Rs 2.5 per km (700 kms), I was in no mood to pay Rs 500-900 for a taxi from Mangalore airport to city (Non AC indica to AC Innova) just 12-15 kms- at roughly Rs 42 to 66 per km. Thus I was determined to find a cheaper way. Asking few friends and bit of online search gave me confidence that I can try public transport and don't have to spend a lot on airport taxi.

Mangaluru airport is closer to my heart- it is closest to my home town, it was the airport from where I took my first flight long back as a kid- but over past 2-3 decades never had a chance to fly in- the cost and timing(one stop flights via Bengaluru that takes most of the productive day time) were not very tempting. Recently Indigo and Spicejet have planned direct flight between Chennai and Mangaluru and at times prices are only marginally more than a KSRTC AC Volvo bus ticket, thus making a tempting proposition.

However, unless you've an economical way to reach Mangaluru airport from city and city to airport, the cost of your trip will catapult.

Unfortunately there're no direct buses to Mangalore airport. KSRTC once wanted to ply its AC buses to Mangaluru airport but the taxi mafia managed to ensure that no buses enter airport. [News] Thus you'll not get any buses that go till airport terminal.

Ola/Uber are an option, but when I tried there were absolutely no cabs/autos. When I asked on twitter Ola confirmed they have service in Mangaluru airport but when I arrived, there were no cabs. Of course you could be lucky and may find a cab- but the probability is on the lower side- Mangaluru airport doesn't get too may flights per day and is away from city, so taxi drivers don't have a motive to come and wait near the airport- they have higher chances of getting rides inside city, so unless they've a drop or at particular time of the day that gets lots of flights you might get a Uber/Ola cab, but rest of the time won't- so Uber/Ola is NOT a reliable option when flying into Mangaluru.
Above left: Ola website claims it is possible to reach Mangaluru railway station from airport for under Rs 200 by auto under 500 by car. Above right: Not a single vehicle was available at 12 noon.

Hiring a taxi at airport will set you back by minimum Rs 500 (Non AC Indica) and up-to 800-1000 for Innova etc depending where you would like to reach in the city. High airport taxi parking fees, greedy taxi drivers who might be getting just one or two rides a day-hence have to earn all their daily money from just one or two rides are some of the factors to blame.

Anyway, so what is the cheapest option to reach Mangaluru city from Mangaluru airport?
The option is to walk for about 1 km from airport and reach the main road. This one km is a well paved road- you can drag your trolley bags.

The bus stop is about 1km from arrival hall, down hill road-easily walkable. Use Hanuman Temple, Bajpe on google maps for easy identification.

Above: Map to reach bus stop to go to Mangaluru from Mangalore airport
Below- photo of the public road (Bajpe Road) and bus stop

Once you reach the main road, wait in the bus stop, there're frequent buses that ply to Mangaluru city. Get into any bus that goes to Mangaluru- get down at convenient places- like Lalbagh if you'd like to go to Udupi or catch a KSRTC bus, or to bus stand (to catch buses to Kerala or go to railway station etc)

Which side of the road to wait?
If you'd like to go to Mangaluru, wait on the side closer to airport. You've to head west from Bajpe airport to reach Mangalore city

Should I wait for particular bus number?
I don't think so. Most buses to to Mangaluru. Still no harm asking before boarding- if a bus doesn't go till Mangaluru, take ticket to Kavoor, closest town/hub from where you can get further transportation.

The bus fare from Mangaluru Airport at Bajpe to city is Rs 14, just about Rs 1 per km. Journey time is 20-40 minutes depending on traffic.

On the way back also you can take a local bus that goes towards Kateel. Ask around in Mangaluru bus stand or wait in Lalbagh bus stop.

Should I always go to Mangaluru city?
No. Going to Mangaluru city will be more convenient to catch further connections. You can also get down at Kavoor and catch a bus to Surathkal or wait in the opposite side and catch a bus to Kateel or Mulki.

What about night time?
I believe you'll get buses from early morning till 8-9PM. Out of this time, frequency will be low and nill during mid night/before 6 AM. If your flight is during such time, then taxi is the only way.

What if I have lots of luggage
You can either drag them along till bus stop or pay for taxi if you value convenience over money. The road from airport arrival till public road is nice-possible to drag your trolley bags.

If you wish to save a few hundred on the taxi, walk out of airport. Outside airport parking area, on the road you will find many taxis waiting- these taxis save on airport parking fee by waiting outside, hence you will be able to negotiate a slightly cheaper rate than what it costs to get into a taxi inside airport.

You can also try team up with other passengers in the flight and try split the taxi fare.

Do you have a better option? Do share your tips.

Top airline news this week

Here's a quick run down on major air travel news around the world this week

1. Air Asia India bribing scam
The most attention grabbing news this week (rather last week) was CBI, India's federal agency, booking Air Asia officials for bribing their way through to relax the laws. AirAsia bribed the previous UPA government officials in order to relax 5/20 rule (5 years of operations, fleet of 20 aircrafts) before being eligible to fly abroad. This 5/20 rule feels stupid and limits an airline's ambition and it is nothing new for business to lobby with government for favorable policies- still bribing is wrong. Need to see how this story progresses, if it affects AirAsia's plans in India and so on
2. No takers for Air India
Govt of India's attempt to sell debt laden national carrier Air India meets with cold response as no bidder comes forward when deadline ended end of May 2018. Not giving full control of the airline and various other restrictive terms is said to be the causes that turned off those who had a bit of interest. Now we need to wait n see how Govt of India moves next.

3. Vistara orders new 787
Air Vistara is said to have ordered a set of new Boeing 787s, ditching Airbus. Details here

4. Jet airways passengers stranded in Mumbai
Jet Airways Ahmadabad bound passengers were stranded recently in Mumbai after a technical fault in the aircraft, coupled by airport maintenance. More details on Times of India

5. World's shortest flights- CNN
CNN has published an article listing world's shortest commercial flights- some of them just a few minutes long. Do read this interesting article if you have time

6. Two Old A380s to be dismantled.
This report suggests that a set of first generation A380s, world's largest commercial plane are being dismantled and sold as junk/spare parts, after its owner failed to find any airline willing to add this super jumbo on their fleet. A380s were said to revolutionize the way we travel, by being able to carry more people (500+) in one go, but airlines around the world seem to have lost their appetite for A380- instead most of them prefer smaller aircrafts which are more fuel efficient and easier to fill up.

7. Qantas long haul dreams
Qantas is aiming to introduce 22-24 hours long flights by 2022. Current longest flights are about 17-18 hours long (Qatar-Auckland - Doha). Qantas wants to fly non stop between Sydney and New York and such long distances. Right now there's no aircraft that can support this dream- hopefully Airbus/Boeing will take this as a challenge and will support Qantas. Read detailed story here

8. Delta plans non stop flights from US to Mumbai.
Right now only Air India is flying non-stop between India and USA. Now the news is that Delta is planning direct non stop flight to Mumbai from 2019. Details are expected by end of 2018. Need to see if Delta can price it cheaper than what Emirates, Etihad or Qatar offer Details here

9. Spicejet Delhi-Kanpur flight from July 3rd
Spicejet is scheduled to begin Delhi-Kanpur direct flight from July 3rd

10. Mumbai airport is world's busiest single runway airport
This NDTV news suggests Mumbai airport handled more than 1000 flights on a single day and this is a record for any airport in the world with single runway.

AirVistara flash sale-upto 75% off

Vistara has announced a 24 hours flash sale, offering upto 75% off.
I didn't find it extremely attractive, as Chennai-Kolkata, Chennai-Delhi, Chennai-Portblair return were all around INR 6500-7000+, which wasn't too tempting and felt standard. Only short haul flights like Chennai-Kochi were cheaper at around INR 3000 per person, which is a decent price on Vistara, considering it is full service airline.

But the current flash sale is expensive than what I had seen in Feb- could book Chennai- Kochi for Rs 2500 approx back then.

However you might wish to check the deals for destinations you have in mind- no harm checking

GoAir monsoon offer 48 hours only

Go Air is running a monsoon sale, valid for 6th and 7th June only.
Key things to know about GoAir Monsoon Sale:

  • Travel dates should be between 24th June to 30th September 2018
  • No refund, no date change allowed

Some of the cheap tickets I saw are as follows:
Chennai-Port Blair return- around 6500+ 450
Delhi- Kolkata- return - 4900+450
BLR- Goa: 3200+450
Mumbai-Ahmedabad: 2900 + 450

India-US-44k return: Air China India sale with 20% off-6,7th June

Update: I checked the fares now- I still see earlier fares and not 20% less.

Air China is running a facebook ad campaign advertising a 20% off on India outbound flights on 6th and 7th June.

If we go by their current fares, those who fly out of Delhi and Mumbai should be able to book a ticket to US for about INR 44000 return. Since Air China is a full service airline, 44k return is 10-15k cheaper than any other alternative- in fact it is better than WOW Air's promotional offer which is currently on. So if you have a US trip on mind, you might want to make use of this deal.

Current fare calendar for reference: Delhi- JFK return for INR 55k. Make a note of current fares for the destination you have in mind and check again on 6th June to ensure it is indeed cheaper.

 Above: Delhi-SFO return for 55k
Below- Delhi-PEK (China Beijing) return for 47k
Osaka Japan is 40k right now- should be 32k during sale
Create your account on https://www.airchina.co.in/ and try on 6th n 7th June 2018 for the 20% off fares.

VietJet Hanoi Osaka flight from November

Vietnam’s VietJet, popularly known as Bikini airline has announced direct flight between Hanoi and Osaka Japan from November 8, 2018
Though booking to Osaka hasn’t been opened yet, at present it is possible to fly to Seoul (a distance similar to Osaka) for about 85 USD one way during promo. Keeping this fare as reference, I expect it will be possible to do a return trip to Japan from Vietnam for about 180-200 USD (INR 14000), which is a great deal.

Below is a regular Eco fare to Seoul ICN from Hanoi- promo should be much cheaper. I am expecting Osaka fares to be similar.

A flight to Japan from India costs around 16k to 20k INR at its best (Air Asia sale) and 40-50k under normal conditions without any sale or in full service airlines.  It might be a good idea to club Vietnam and Japan trip in one and take advantage of Vietjet’s promo fares to Japan, as and when it is made available. If Vietjet can offer Hanoi-Osaka return for around 200 USD, you can book India- Vietnam for about INR 11-15k (During AirAsia sale)- thus in about 30k you can visit both Vietnam and Japan

Related posts: Japan on budget * Vietnam on budget
VietJet was also said to begin India operation soon, but the exact dates are not known. Delhi flight is said to be to Ho Chi Minh City, not Hanoi. It might even be possible to fly Delhi -Osaka, Delhi-Seoul super cheap once India operations begin. At present Vietjet only offers very few connecting flights on its network.

Malaysia Airline Mid Year Deals 30% off

Malaysia Airline had very recently had held Grand travel deals offer (End of April 2018) offering up to 30% off. Just about a month later, they are back with another 30% off sale, calling it Mid Year Deals.

While the discounted rates are not extremely tempting, given that MH is a full service airline, you might want to check and book if you wish to travel in comfort. Chennai-Singapore return for 13k is very good deal, but problem is it is a one stop flight with lots of layover in KUL. Many would prefer to fly direct even if it is expensive by a thousand or two.
Do check Malaysia Airline website for available deals and book if it excites you. You can book till end of March 2019 to avail these discounts.

Win a Maruti Ciaz with JetAirways

Jet Airways is giving its customers an offer to win a Maruti Ciaz and other cool prizes.. Read further to find all the details
Maruti Ciaz with all doors open
I was wondering why Jet Airways hasn't launched any interesting offers on the occasion of their 25th Anniversary. There was a 10% off announced earlier, which wasn't exciting enough.

Finally Jet Airways has launched a lucky draw kind of offer- if you book a ticket and fly with them, you stand a chance to win a Maruti Ciaz sedan, Google Pixel 2 or holidays
To be eligible you need to book a ticket on Jet Airways website before June 30th- which is fine, but what I didn't like is the second rule that says Travel Date should be before end of July 2018. That is too short a period and prices will be generally high for near term bookings. If travel date was allowed a bit longer, say till end of 2018 or say March 2019, it would have been great.

It is not clear which version of Ciaz will be given. My guess is cheapest variant will be given and winner will also be expected to pay for tax, insurance, handling etc- which will add up to 2-3 lakhs.

My 3 year old review of Maruti Ciaz is here. The car has got multiple facelifts since then.

More details here- all the best if you're trying.
