Delhi to Toronto/Vancouver Canada cheap ticket 52-55k return May 2020!

Flying to Toronto, Canada is often a bit expensive at around 70-75k due to relatively less options (particularly 1 stop) from India. Last minute fares could touch even 1 lakh rupees one way.
However if you are looking at visiting Canada or Toronto, there seem to be some deals for May 2020 for around 52-55k. Departure 6th May, Return 19th May. (Might be available for other date combinations as well, do check)
 Some more options on Skyscanner
Return tickets under 53k available to Vancouver British Colombia as well.
Note: This fare seems exclusively on Makemytrip as Air India official website is showing much higher fare. MMT will add some convenience fee in final stage extra.

Fare under 60k return is a good deal if you are serious about visiting Canada. Canada Tourist visa costs about 9k, takes a month or two to process. You might get it for long term (till your passport expiry) if lucky. Start planning.

May is perfect time to visit Canada. I had visited Vancouver in May this year- a fair bit of snow might still be there on the hills while it will be spring in most cities.

Some of my Canada posts published so far:
1) Bowen Islands- Nice day trip from Vancouver
2) Grouse Grind difficult hiking experience, Vancouver

Kalaburagi Airport Karnataka begins operation-all you need to know

Karnataka got a new airport today, at Kalaburgi in northern Karnataka. This post is a quick round up of all the information available w.r.t Kalaburgi airport

Where is Kalaburagi?
Kalaburgi (ಕನ್ನಡ: ಕಲಬುರಗಿ ) is also known as Gulbarga airport is in the northern tip of Karnataka between Bidar and Bijapura. Kalaburagi airport is some 13 kms from Gulbarga town, just 200 kms from Telangana Capital Hyderabad and some 550 kms from State capital Bengaluru.

Why Kalaburagi airport is important?
Because of long distance from state capital Bengaluru, people of Gulbarga and nearby districts have to spend a long time on bus/train journey to reach Bengaluru or any other metro. Flight connectivity at reasonable price will give a big boost to travelers in the region.

Karnataka doesn't have many active airports. Except Bengaluru, (BLR) next most active airport in Mangaluru (IXE). There are a few more airports- Mysuru, Hubli, Belagavi, Vijayanagara (near Hampi) etc but these have barely a few flights per day- not even half a dozen. Compared to this neighboring states like TN (Madhurai, Coimbatore, Trichy, Salem, Tuticorin etc), Kerala have more airports and more flights. Kalaburagi becomes another airport on the list having scheduled flights under UDAN scheme, hopefully it grows further.

So who is flying to Kalaburagi?
Right now only Star Air has announced three times a week flight between Kalaburagi and Bengaluru. Ticket prices start at around INR 3000, which is reasonable, considering an AC bus between two cities easily costs INR 800-1500 depending on day of the week and type of bus. For just twice the price, saving of 8-9 hours of journey time is very good option for most.

Also Star Air is not selling one stop ticket to other destinations on its network- such as Delhi Hindon from Kalaburagi yet.

No word yet from other airlines like Indigo or Spicejet or Alliance air about any flight to Kalaburagi. Most OTAs such as Skyscanner don't even recognize Kalaburagi airport code. We have to wait and see how successful this route will be.

What is there to see near Kalaburagi?
If you fly to Kalaburagi, keeping Gulbarga as a base you can visit Vijapur Gol Bumbaz (160 kms), Bidar (130 kms), Mantralaya (200 kms), Solhapur (140 kms) etc.

We wish lots of success to Star Air and Kalaburagi airport. More about the airport on Wikipedia here

If I ever launch an airline!

If I ever launch an airline, here're some unique features it will have!
1. Priority De-boarding: Everyone sells priority boarding- what is the point? Why pay more just to get in a few minutes earlier when you can stretch your legs in the terminal a little longer? If I ever launch an airline I will offer Priority De-boarding. Those who pay extra for this will be escorted to front of the plane just before landing and will get to get off the plane ahead of rest of the passengers.

2. Cook your own meals: Instead of trying to sell food for high prices, my airline will rent kitchen access by the minute. Passengers can book a few minutes of onboard kitchen, cook their own stuff and enjoy the meals.

3. Folding seats: I will install foldable seats, like those in the last row of SUVs. Any unsold seat can be folded to create extra space and probably those who sit behind and get to enjoy this extra space can be asked to pay a premium

4. Enter and Exit the plane via cargo hold: What is this drama of passengers having to check-in their bags, then wait to collect their bags and so on? In my planes, life will be lot simple. Passengers will take their check-in bag all the way to the plane on their own- those who have check-in bag will enter via cargo hold, keep their bags in the hold and climb a ladder upstairs to their seats. While getting off the plane they will take the ladder down, go to cargo hold, grab their bags and exit via cargo door. I don't have to pay baggage handlers, no risk of losing a bag in transit, no need for anyone to wait for their bags. Simple life!

5. Keep your phones on: Instead of torturing all passengers to switch off their phones, I would simply install a signal jammer near the aircraft- let them try using it. Saves time and effort for everyone.

6. Bring your own food and drink: Instead of paying for expensive catering, in my airline passengers can bring their own food and alcohol. But rule is only 50% they get to consume and the rest airline can sell to other passengers. It is win-win for both. Instead of paying 3-4 times the cost for onboard food and drink, passengers can bring their own food for one fourth the price they would have otherwise paid, get to consume half of it- meaning 50% savings for them outright. Airline will sell remaining half to other passengers to recover its operating expenses- no need to pay for expensive catering and other passengers also get to buy super cheap.

7. Special exit for pilots: Planes almost entirely run on autopilot. Physical pilots are there only for psychological assurance of passengers. There is no reason to have them in the cockpit all the time. In my airline pilots will enter via rear door, walk through the aisle of the plane so that everyone get to see them, then enter cockpit, make some announcements and then exit via cockpit windows provided with an external ladder. This way they can proceed to repeat this duty on the next flight while previous aircraft goes to its destination on its own using Autopilot. Smart right?

8. Select your profile: Instead of treating all passengers equal, we will give everyone an option how they would like to be treated. You can select from
Option 1: Give me all the food and drink you can at once, let me have it and go to sleep
Option 2: Keep feeding me continuously all through the flight- if anyone refuses their meal bring it to me as well, as I don't like food being wasted
Option 3: I just want to sleep. Can you pack and parcel my food?
Option 4: All my food is in cargo hold. Can I go there and get it?

9. Serve food before boarding or after reaching destination
What is the need to do so much circus and serve food onboard? My airline will serve food to passengers while they are waiting at the gate or after they reach the destination- this way catering cost will be low, people can have a comfortable flight without having to eat bland food in confined spaces.

10. Rename Economy as Superior Class
Most hotels have renamed their basic rooms as "Superior Rooms" to give an impression that guests are getting a better category rooms. I will use same tactic and call my Economy as Superior Class

Will you fly with my airline?

ANA Chennai-Tokyo 23000 INR Return

ANA Japan that has recently started non stop service between Chennai and Tokyo has discounted the fares further. Earlier lowest fares were around 30-33k INR, now it has dropped further to 23k INR.

This super discounted fare is available for various dates in early 2020. 23k INR return makes it cheaper than Air Asia. Note than ANA super value fare is non refundable.
I also fear if they may discontinue this route- deep discounting is probably a sign that demand is very poor and airline is unable to fill this plane. If this sustains ANA may decide to discontinue this route. Fare from any other Indian city is almost 50% more expensive. (ANA flies to Mumbai, Delhi and BLR is also planned)

Anyway, if Japan is on your radar, you won't get a better deal than this.

Kolkata Bali low fare-Just 10450 INR Return on Malindo Air -Book Now!

Malindo Air has return ticket from Kolkata to Bali for just INR 10500 for travel in June 2020. Could be available for other dates as well. Check and book now- You are very unlikely to get a more cheaper return ticket to Bali from India.

Check screenshots below.

10500 INR for return ticket to Bali is one of the lowest I have seen. If Bali is on your mind, you should grab this opportunity and book your tickets now before it is gone. You have six months to plan rest of the trip.

Points to note:
1. Fare doesn't include checked bag or meals. Only 7 KG cabin bag is included. If you need bags return ticket cost goes up by another 9k, which is still reasonable. For a family/group of four, may be one person can buy with baggage fare and others can manage with cabin bags.

2. In flight entertainment, blanket (for night departures) included. Headphones are given on demand.

3. Malindo has stopped free meals. Meals can be booked online for 10 MYR or can be purchased on board for 15 MYR. That is 40 MYR per person for round trip (INR 700) extra if you wish to buy meals. Photo of my Paneer Jira Rice I had on my recent Malindo air flight.
If you are not from Kolkata return ticket to Kolkata is about 6k INR from most Indian cities. Still a fair deal to visit Bali. Book now on Malindo air website: https://www.malindoair.com/in/

AirAsia refund process changed to 2 step process

Air Asia has changed its refund process. Earlier, cancelling or seeking refund on Air Asia for airport tax refund or refund due to flight cancellation involved filling up a lengthy e-form wherein customers need to fill some 30+ fields. The process was deliberately kept complicated hoping some customers never seek refund or give up. I had written about Air Asia's deliberately complicated cancellation process in detail last year.

Now Air Asia has changed the process.
E-form no longer supports refund option. For that you have to now use AVA chat bot. This chat bot captures some basic details like PNR and creates a case for you.
After few days someone will evaluate the case and if found valid, you will get an email asking for your bank details to credit refund. You need to now respond within 7 days to get your refund.

Earlier though complex entire request could be submitted in one step. Now it is a bit simplified but you should remember to watch your mail box and respond within few days on additional details asked. I think the new form is relatively better, if not the optimal way. Best way would have been to give a cancel/refund button next to the booking in MyBookings section and let people raise the request and track it online.

Short scenic flight between Bali and Lombok-Lion Air

Last week I got to flew between Bali and Lombok. This gave me lots of opportunities
  1. Got to check Bali Airport's Domestic terminal and its colourful paintings for the first time
  2. Experienced a flight seat belt with airbag for the first time.
  3. The flight being too short, got very scenic view of islands and water below.
  4. Got to try Lion Air for the first time
  5. Realized that just like Airbus A321, Boeing 737-900 ER also has an exit row seat with super extra leg room
I've already written separate posts about #1 and #2. In this post, I am covering the rest.
#3- Scenic views from the window seat- between Lombok (LOP) and Bali (DPS)
Be sure to grab a window seat while flying between Bali and Lombok (or other destinations within Indonesia)- the views will be amazing.
Above: Blongas area of Lombok island
What you are seeing above are Lembongan island and Ceningan Island off Penida islands- Google map reference below. First photo of this post also depicts the same islands from another view.
Do watch this short  90 sec video of landing and take off from Bali.
Above: A screen grab from the video- Bali Mandra Toll road over Nusa Dua- view more such pics from my 2017 flight from Malindo air Window seat here.

#4 Lion Air Experience
Our flight to Lombok from Bali was too short - some 20-30 minutes. So not enough to review an airline. But from whatever we experienced, my first two Lion Air flights were great- almost on time, service was great, plane was good (I was suspecting they might deploy a smaller aircraft-even turboprop given the very short duration, but flying in 737-900 ER is more comfortable than any of the rivals - like Air Asia's A320). No food was served during the flight.

#5 The Extra Long Leg room
Lion Air  group fleet largely consists of Boeing aircrafts. The particular aircraft we flew to Lombok from Bali and back was a 737-900 ER with single class configuration. Great thing about this plane is seat number 32A and 32F, which are one row behind exit row and offer super extra leg room. I have had similar space in Air India A321 and Srilankan earlier but get to sit in similar seat of a Boeing 737 for the first time.
Malindo Air, Batik air and others also use same aircraft type- 737-900 ER but they have a dual class configuration- Business and Economy and do not have extra leg room space behind exit row like shown above- this is because Lion Air's 737-900 ER is optimized for local domestic flights with maximum seats as possible while Malindo Air/Batik Air 737-900 ERs are used for international routes that need to carry lots of food, support business class seats etc- so crew seating (jump seats) layout is different there.

On my way to Lombok from Bali, row ahead of me (31 D and E) were empty, so I was given ABP briefing. However on my way back, row 31 was occupied, so I was not given any ABP briefing. (Able Bodied Person briefing is the brief set of instructions given to passengers siting near emergency exit on how to open the door n precautions to take while opening it, if a need arises)

Malindo/Batik 737-900 ER has row 16 and 17 as exit rows. Row 17 doesn't recline and is assigned free of cost to ABPs (Able Bodied Persons) upon request while Row 16 is chargeable.
Be advised Indonesia domestic flights allow only 15 Kg check-in baggage. If you've flown to Bali with much higher allowance you will have to pay extra for domestic flight baggage check-in.

Scoot no longer charging convenience fee!

Scoot airline used to charge a massive INR 500 per sector extra as convenience fee so far. For a round trip ticket involving one stop (4 flights total), that is INR 2000 extra for each person on a scoot ticket. This had put Scoot over a major disadvantage over all its rivals as no one used to charge so much extra as convenience fee per ticket- Air Asia charges around 360 to 800 Rs (net-banking/credit card), websites like MMT charge roughly 600 more, Easemytrip would not charge anything etc.

However recently a twitter user, Shyam Kumar (@VenkateshShyam) alerted me that Scoot is no longer charging convenience fee since Oct 2019. I decided to check it myself and this seems to be true. Went till final payments page and website was showing Zero convenience fee after adding credit card details. So this is good news.
Appreciate this move by Scoot. Air Asia- now ball is in your court!

Aircraft seatbelt with airbag: Lion Air B737-900ER

This is something I noticed for the first time- aircraft seat belt with airbag in it. For my journey from Bali to Lombok, I was seated in row 32F. 32F is not the emergency exit row, but a row behind it. Due to unique layout of 737-900 ER all economy configuration, this row gets extra legroom as shown in the picture. I have had similar seats in Air India A321, Srilankan and Qatar Airways A330.

However, one thing I had not noticed so far was the unusually thicker seat belt. The seat belt in my seat was extra reinforced in buckle area, thicker belt. While I was trying to figure out why seatbelt was thicker, I saw the sticker indicating there's an airbag inside.
Asked cabin crew why this airbag- her answer was that airbag is provided to prevent face to face collision with cabin crew who might be seated in the jump seat in front. Nice thought.

Not sure if similar seat in A321 also had an airbag- unable to recall now- don't remember feeling/spotting anything unusual in seatbelt.

Children are not allowed to be seated in seats that have airbags in seat belt- because airbag is not designed for kids and might cause more harm than protection.

Why not provide an airbag in all seatbelts? It will prevent people from banging their head into seat infront of them? I feel it is not done due to following reasons
1. Cost- adding 200 airbags will increase cost
2. Airbags need space to deploy. In highly congested economy row with full adults occupying, not very sure if a seat airbag has enough space to deploy properly without hurting people around. Not an expert in this-just a thought.

Air India Chennai Jaffna bookings open at 12k return

Air India subsidiary alliance air had done a test flight to Jaffna last month and there was news of regular service starting soon between two cities- read detailed analysis in this post.

However it was not clear from when the service would start or the fare. Now the details are out. Alliance Air Chennai-Jaffna service will be starting next week, 3 times a week. News tip off courtesy Kartik Kannan
But Air India's own website is not yet updated to support Jaffna's airport code. I was checking it once a while and drew a blank. You can't book the Jaffna flight on Air India website, yet. However, booking is open on OTAs such as MMT.

Sadly the Chennai-Jaffna ticket is priced much more than Chennai-Colombo. Chennai-Colombo return ticket can be had for INR 9000, so I was expecting Jaffna to be cheaper at under 6000, as it is shorter (less fuel), new airport (less tax n fees). But Air India has decided to keep the price 2x more than what I was expecting- most probably to take advantage of monopoly- no other airline is flying this sector yet. Because of this high price I don't have any motive to go there right away. Will wait and watch to see of price drops to a more rationale level.

Air India is advertising a one way fare of 4000 INR but return ticket will be a bit expensive due to higher taxes/airport fees in Srilanka I guess, taking total to more than 11k INR + Convenience fee. It might be wise to fly in to Jaffna, explore Srilanka and return via Colombo than having to come back to Jaffna.
What is your thought? Are you keen to fly to Jaffna?

Colourful paintings of Bali domestic airport

Bali's Ngurah Rai Domestic airport is small but full of colourful wall painting/art. In this post sharing some of the photos I clicked yesterday, while awaiting to board our flight to Lombok

Bali domestic airport also has multiple photo opportunity spots
Below photo, as well as first one in this post are clicked by Manjulika Promod, who blogs at Pendown

Most paintings depict Indonesia's culture and history. At Gate 01, lots of scenic photos are printed.

Below photo seems to be a combination of Banana tree growing coconut but we will dismiss as an artist's freedom!
Coming up next- photos from my short flight to Lombok
